A comparison of seven gooseberry cultivars with respect to yield components and fruit quality

Yield components and fruit quality of seven gooseberry (Ribes grossularia L.) cultivars were compared. 'Invicta', which ripened early, had high yield, and the largest berries, but the content of sugars, acids and L-ascorbic acid was low. 'Scania', which ripened three weeks later, had the highest yield, the smallest fruits, and the content of soluble solids and acids were high. It contained more fructose and less glucose than other cultivars, and the juice was rich in malic acid. 'Hinnonmäen Keltainen' was similar to 'Invicta', but had smaller fruits. The red cultivar 'Whinham's Industry' and the white 'Whitesmith' had good fruit quality, but together with ‘Jakob’ they were susceptible to mildew. 'Captivator' is the only cultivar with no spines.
