Current situation and perspectives of mango industry in Petrolina and Juazeiro regions, Brazil

Mango presents large annual increasing rates of consumption, approximately 13% per year. Nowadays, Brazil is the fourth largest mango exporter. That impressive participation of mango production is due, largely, to Petrolina/Juazeiro production zones and the opening of the world market. Producers in these regions get mango production out of season compared with other countries. Good environmental conditions associated with modern technologies of production make it possible. Mango production in the year 2000 in the zone occupied 19,262 hectares (38.9% of the area with fruit). This production was responsible for more than 24% of the Brazilian mango production, and approximately 80% of the Brazilian mango exports. Export varieties such as Tommy Atkins, Haden and Keitt are cultivated and have great acceptability on the international market. Participation of that zone in Brazilian fruit exports, especially mango, has been increasing competitiveness of the country and, increasing the income of the producers.
