What can molecular biology do for postharvest technology?
The short answer to the title question is ‘Nothing by itself but a lot in combination with other technologies’. There is a popular but erroneous concept that genetic engineering is a self-sufficient discipline that can deliver commercial products ready for commercialization and human consumption. Nothing further from the truth. Genetic modification has an incredible potential as long as it is used in combination with expertise and knowledge derived from other disciplines such as physiology and it needs to be integrated with agricultural practices in order to have an impact in modern agriculture. In this paper, I will try to justify my assertion and discuss some aspects in which genetic engineering can make a positive contribution towards solving postharvest problems.
