Supply chain management in asia

Historically the view of the supply chain started with a manufacturer or producer and advanced through the various levels until the item reached its final destination, the consumer. In many instances the consumer took whatever was offered and had very little influence in the product, its value or its presentation. The formation and growth of major retail operations across the globe, coupled with their detailed use of informationhas altered and transformed the demands on the supply chain. While each of the links in the supply chain has separate and essential roles to play, the most important and perhaps the most critical link is the final one, the consumer. They are the judges and jury as to whether you will succeed or fail. Regardless of where you live, Europe, America, Australia or Asia the consumer’s fresh produce demands are the same world over.

This presentation will draw on our experience over the last 5 years with the Park ‘N’ Shop supermarket chain in Hong Kong. We built on the traditional wet market system. Customers who shopped in the wet markets usually bought their groceries at our stores. We encouraged them to buy fresh food in our stores by offering similar items to those found in wet markets plus fruit from many regions of the world. We supported this new concept with refrigerated distribution centres, laboratories to monitor food safety, staff training and a dedicated quality assurance department. Future trends in Asia will discussed.
