Study of pawpaw marketing in Brazil-DF.

Main factors of pawpaw marketing were studied in the state of Brasilia, Brazil, in 10 supermarkets and 9 retail shops in January, 1999. Data were collected using questionnaires filled in by managers. Wholesalers of the Federal District Wholesale Market (CEASA-DF) were the main suppliers of pawpaw. High fruit loss rates were found only in retail shops resulting from poor fruit quality, delays between purchasing and selling, precarious transport system and climatic conditions. In supermarkets, lack of appropriate storage, poor fruit quality, climatic conditions and fruit handling by customers were the main causes of fruit loss.
