Effect of chlorination treatment on the control of seed deterioration in cotton (Gossypium sp.).

The effect of chlorination on 17 cotton cultivars and 1 hybrid was evaluated. Seeds treated with a chlorine-based halogen mixture (3 g/kg), containing dehydrated CaOCl2, dehydrated CaCO3, and Albezzia amara leaf powder, were packed in polyethylene bags, heat sealed, kept for 5 days under ambient conditions, packed in gada cloth, and stored under similar conditions for 2 months. Chlorine treatment significantly increased seed viability and germination, root and shoot lengths, seedling dry matter production, vigour index, and seed leachate electrical conductivity as well as reduced the incidence of storage fungi. Significant variation among cultivars was also observed. P4 and HB224 recorded the greatest mean shoot and root lengths and vigour index. Dry matter production was highest in M12, Supriya, Anjali, and T7. The lowest seed leachate electrical conductivity was observed in Supriya, K11, and Uppam.
