Effect of certain chemicals on tuberose vase life.

A field experiment was undertaken during 2000-01 in Bangalore, Karnataka, India, to determine the effect of chemical treatments on vase life of tuberose [Polianthes tuberosa] cv. Double. There were 20 treatments involving a control and various non-toxic mineral salts, i.e. calcium nitrate (CaNO3), zinc sulfate (ZnSO4) and magnesium sulfate (MgSO4), at 0.25, 0.50 and 1.00 mM and 2% sucrose alone and in combination with other specified minerals. Observations on postharvest parameters were recorded at 5 and 10 days interval. Results on the effect of non-toxic minerals and sucrose on water relations revealed that there was a general decline over the control in cumulative water uptake and cumulative water loss on both days of observation at all concentrations of CaNO3, ZnSO4 and MgSO4. Spikes treated with 2% sucrose+0.50 mM CaNO3 recorded the maximum (18.5 days) vase life compared to other treatments. Similarly, the maximum percentage (76) of opened florets and the minimum percentage (24) of unopened florets were recorded by spikes treated with 2% sucrose+0.50 mM CaNO3.
