Postharvest life of gladiolus as influenced by floral preservatives.

A study was conducted during 1997-98 to develop appropriate methods for prolonging the postharvest life of Gladiolus cv. American Beauty and to study the changes associated with extended vase life. Floral preservatives improved the diameter and opening of the florets over those placed in tap water. Maximum diameter of first (13.0 cm) and fifth floret (12.6 cm) was found in 4% sucrose+100 ppm CaSO4+50 ppm AgNO3. The number of fully opened florets increased and percent of partially opened and unopened florets was decreased by floral preservatives. These results indicate that CaSO4 and AgNO3 in combination with sucrose proved more effective in increasing water uptake, opening, diameter and longevity of florets, vase life and total blooming period.
