Effect of pulsing treatments on post-harvest characters of gladiolus.

An experiment was conducted during 1990/91, at Solan, Himachal Pradesh, India, to evaluate the effects of various pulsing solutions, applied separately and in combination with sugar, on the postharvest characteristics of cut spikes of gladiolus cultivars Sylvia and Friendship. Nine treatments were evaluated: (i) 4 mM silver thiosulfate (STS) for 15 min; (ii) 4 mM STS for 15 min followed by 10% sugar for 16 h; (iii) 1 mM STS for 20 h; (iv) 1 mM STS+10% sugar for 20 h; (v) 500 ppm 8-hydroquinone (HQ) for 45 min; (vi) 500 ppm HQ for 45 min followed by 10% sugar for 16 h; (vii) 400 ppm HQ for 20 h; (viii) 400 ppm HQ+10% sugar for 20 h; (ix) and control. No noticeable effects on appearance, i.e. freshness and colour of spikes remained unchanged, was observed due to the pulsing treatments. The cultivars Sylvia and Friendship consumed the maximum pulsing solution (19.8 and 19 ml, respectively) in 400 ppm HQ+10% sugar for 20 h, indicating improved water uptake under these conditions. Sylvia and Friendship gave maximum vase life (10.0 and 10.4 days, respectively) with 4 mM STS for 15 min followed by 10% sugar for 16 h. In general, vase life was at par in both cultivars.
