Susceptibility to postharvest chilling damage in sweet peppers, and treatments to minimize its effect.

The susceptibility to chilling damage of, and the effects of different postharvest treatments on tolerant sweet pepper (Capsicum annuum) cultivar El Paso and the susceptible cultivar King Arthur were evaluated in December 2000 in Chile. The percentage chilling damage was 7.7 and 18.6% in El Paso and King Arthur fruits, respectively. Immersion in hot water (60 deg C) for 1 minute decreased chilling damage by 58%, and plastic film cover by 91%, at 15 days storage and 90% relative humidity. These treatments maintained the appearance of the fruits for 3 days extended storage period at 20 deg C and 90% relative humidity. Calcium chloride, methylcyclopropene and methyl jasmonate did not reduce chilling damage.
