Post harvest management of bulk-harvested barley using rice and barley processing complex.

At present, farmers produce less barley. This is due to the difficult postharvest treatments of barley: drying, cleaning and packaging. This study was conducted to investigate the optimum postharvest management of bulk-harvested barley using rice processing complex (RPC). Bulk-harvested barley was stored at 61.1% moisture content after 18.00 h at RPC. Grain moisture contents of bulk-harvested barley differed according to storage date, farmer household, and field size. Required hours for drying differs depending on grain moisture contents. The average drying hour was 9.5 h per 10a and drying rate was 0.89%. The proportion of impurity removed by coarse cleaning differs according to grain moisture contents: higher grain moisture content increased impurity rate up to 38.9%. Drying cost of bulk-harvested barley was 50 won/kg at above 24% grain moisture contents, and the average drying cost was 41.25 won/kg and 14 400 won/10a. The 62% of barley treated was stored in indoor-grain bin, and the others packed in 500 kg-poly con bag were stored in insulated warehouse.
