Identification and characteristics of Penicillium spp. isolated from postharvest decay of pear.

A study was conducted to identify and characterize Penicillium spp. isolates from pear fruits with postharvest decay. One-hundred and ninety-eight Penicillium spp. were isolated from infected pear fruits, and were classified into 15 groups based on size, colour, pigment of colony and shape of conidia. These isolates were identified as P. expansum, P. solitum and P. crustosum based on morphological, cultural and physiological characteristics. Pathogenicity was found to be higher under wound inoculation at low temperature than in unwounded fruit. This result confirmed that wounding promoted disease appearance. P. expansum was identified as the most virulent species, whereas P. solitum and P. crustosum were classified as weakly virulent species by pathogenicity on pear fruits.
