The storability and its regulatory mechanism of Huanghua pear (Pyrus pyrifolia Nakai.) fruit as influenced by postharvest treatments.

Different temperatures and polyethylene film (PEF) packing treatments were carried out on postharvest pear fruit cv. Huanghua to investigate their effects on fruit storability and the regulatory mechanism. Lipoxygenase activity, O2- content, allene oxide synthase [hydroperoxide dehydratase] activity, ACC synthase [1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylate synthase] activity, ACC content, ACC oxidase [1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylate oxidoreductase] activity and ethylene production changed peaks in ripening fruits at 20 deg C and were inhibited by cold storage. The incidence of fruit woolliness and fruit decay were lightened as well. Low temperature combined with PEF packing (PEF1 and PEF2) treatments further improved the fruit storability, maintaining preferable quality. There was no significant difference between PEF1 and PEF2 both during cold storage at 1 deg C and shelf life at 20 deg C. The recommended storage period of Huanghua fruit was two months at 1 deg C and could be extended one month longer  with PEF packing treatments.
