Varietal resistance of maize to the maize weevil, Sitophilus zeamais Motsch. (Coleoptera: Curculionidae).

Studies on the varietal resistance of maize to postharvest infestation of the maize weevil, S. zeamais was carried out in the laboratory at a temperature of 28 plus or minus 2 deg C and relative humidity of 75 plus or minus 5%. The cultivars of maize tested were ACR.91SWAMI/SRCI, 9044-27STR, TZL COMP.4C1, 9021-18STR, TZE COMP.4C2 and TZESR-WS.E. They were collected from the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), Ibadan, Nigeria. The infestation of the maize cultivars was done by adding 5 adult males and 10 adult females to 20 g of each cultivar, and replicated three times. The parameters for testing the resistance were emergence of F1, grain damage and weight loss. An index of susceptibility was also calculated. Results showed that cultivars TZE COMP.4C2, ACR.91SWAM1/SRC1 and TZL COMP.4C1 were the most resistant of all the cultivars tested in terms of adult emergence, percentage grain damage and percentage weight loss while 9044-27STR (the standard), 9021-18STR and TZESR-WS.E were the least resistant cultivars. However, cv. TZE COMP.4C2, with index of susceptibility (SI) = 1.12, was the most resistant while TZESR-WS.E, with SI = 4.75, was the least resistant. The initial and final moisture content of the different maize cultivars indicated that none of the cultivars suffered any disadvantage of S. zeamais attack due to the difference in moisture content.
