1-MCP can make a big breakthrough for storage.

The effects of 1-MCP (1-methylcyclopropene) on apples (cultivars Jonagold and Golden Delicious) were investigated in the Netherlands during 2000-01. A single application of 1-MCP was carried out after harvesting, followed by 6 months storage at 1 deg C under controlled atmosphere (CA) conditions (1.2% O2 and 4% CO2) or cold storage. Firmness, colour and sugar content were determined after 2, 4 and 6 months of storage, followed by normal storage (7 days at 18 deg C). No loss of firmness was found after the use of 1-MCP, and yellow discoloration of cv. Jonagold decreased. Cold-stored apples showed greater firmness loss than CA-stored apples, unless treated with 1-MCP. Treated apples did not show firmness losses during normal storage (18 deg C). Short-term CA storage might be replaced by 1-MCP treatment.
