Effect of calcium chloride and gibberellic acid treatments on Anna and Dorest Golden apples during storage: B - Chemical characteristics of fruits.

The effect of postharvest application of 2 and 4% CaCl2 and 50 ppm GA3 on the shelf life and quality of the fruits of apple cultivars Anna and Dorest Golden during cold and room temperature storage was studied during the 1996 and 1997 cropping seasons. The total soluble solids percentage (TSS%) increased with prolonged storage periods. GA3 yielded the lowest values of TSS% followed by calcium chloride at 4%, and calcium chloride at 2%, whereas, the control apples yielded the highest TSS% in both the cultivars for both the years. GA3 treatment gave the highest value concerning total acidity followed by CaCl2 at 4 and 2% concentrations, respectively. The TSS/acid ratio gradually increased with prolonged storage period. All treatments significantly decreased TSS/acid ratio in both Anna and Dorest Golden apples stored at 0-1 deg C or room temperature during the 1996 and 1997 seasons. In general, the percentage of reducing sugars increased as storage period prolonged.
