Response of China aster to spacing.

An experiment with China aster [Callisthephus chinensis] cv. Kamini was conducted in Bangalore, Karnataka, India, during 1997-98. There were 9 plant spacings, i.e. 40x40, 40x30, 30x30, 40x20, 30x20, 40x10, 20x20, 30x10 and 20x10 cm, accommodating 4, 6, 9, 10, 20, 25, 30 and 50 plants, respectively, per square meter basis. The greatest plant height of 56.97 cm was recorded with the closest spacing of 20x10 cm. Treatments 20x10, 30x10, 20x20, 40x10 and 30x20 cm were on par with each other. The maximum plant spread of 23.32 cm was recorded in the widest spacing of 40x40 cm. However, this treatment was on a par with 40x30, 30x30 and 40x20 cm spacings. The maximum number of flowers (60.94), weight of flowers (90.84 g) and seed yield (10.44 g) per plant were recorded at 40x40 cm. On the other hand, the maximum weight of flowers (6.75 kg) and seed yield (627.00 g) per plot were obtained at 20x10 cm. The rest of the parameters, i.e. diameter of flowers, length of flower stalk, weight of individual flower and postharvest quality of cut flowers were not significantly affected by the different spacing treatments.
