Influence of harvest season, fruit maturity and storage temperature on the development of chilling injury in 'Eureka' lemon fruit.

The effects of harvest season, maturity and storage temperature on lemon cv. Eureka chilling injury susceptibility were investigated. Yellow and green Eureka fruits were harvested on 14 March (summer) and 4 July (winter) [date not given] from a commercial orchard in La Cruz (Chile) and stored at 0, 5 and 13 deg C. Observations were recorded for rind colour, juice content, soluble solids (SS) and titratable acidity (TA). Rind colour showed the greatest change in yellow fruits stored at 13 deg C. At the end of cold storage yellow fruits harvested in winter were juicier than those harvested in summer. Stored fruits showed little SS evolution compared with fruits at harvest. Fruits kept at 13 deg C showed higher TA than those stored at lower temperatures. Pitting and peteca incidence were greater in summer-harvested fruits and in those stored at temperatures below 5 deg C. Membranosis in winter fruits and albedo browning in summer ones were observed in those in those kept at 5 deg C.
