Development of a co-extruded film for the packaging of fresh cut vegetables.

A study was conducted to develop and validate a model that can predict the permeability of a film with a known composition and to use it for the development of packaging films for fresh cut produce. The predicted oxygen transmission rate was within 10% deviation of the measured values. The keeping quality tests showed that the EMA (3% oxygen and 4% carbon dioxide) was achieved in the test packaging, produced with a film having the required permeability for the specific vegetable and packaging configuration. In the control packaging, produced with a film actually used by packers, the oxygen percentage decreased quickly and reached zero on the third day. At the same time, carbon dioxide increased until 14% (day 6).
