Management of post harvest fungal diseases of carrot using botanicals.

In this study, the use of botanicals to manage postharvest diseases Cladosporium rot (Cladosporium oxysporum), Fusarium rot (Fusarium solani f.sp. radicicola) and Geotrichum rot (Geotrichum candidum) of carrots is demonstrated. Cold and hot water extracts at 5 and 10% of Azadirachta indica, Ocimum sanctum [O. tenuiflorum], Bougainvillea spectabilis, Catharanthus roseus, Eucalyptus globulus, Nerium odorum [N. oleander], Parthenium hysterophorus, Prosopis juliflora and Vitex negundo var. purpurascens were tested. The in vitro inhibition of Cladosporium oxysporum mycelial growth was maximum upon treatment with A. indica, followed by O. sanctum and V. negundo var. purpurescens. The inhibition of F. solani f.sp. radicicola mycelial growth was maximum upon treatment with A. indica extract, particularly the cold water extract. The extract of A. indica showed the maximum G. candidum mycelial growth inhibition. Cold water extracts were more effective than the hot water extracts. Cold water extract at 10% of V. negundo var. purpurescens was more effective in reducing the postharvest rots up to four days.
