Evaluation of postharvest qualities of standard carnation flowers grown under naturally ventilated greenhouse.

Standard carnation flowers grown under naturally ventilated polyhouse were evaluated for postharvest quality during 1998-99, in Hessaraghatta, Bangalore, Karnataka, India. Ten cultivars under the study were Aicardi (red), Cerise Rimo (red purple), Desio (red), Forca (purple), Isaq (yellow), Navajo (streaked purple), Sunrise (red), Tasman (yellow), Lillac Torres (red purple) and White Feathers (white). Flowers were grade based on flower stalk length codes 31-40, 41-50 and 51-60. Observations on 10 flowers per treatment on flower stalk length, fresh weight, diameter and vase life were recorded. Based on length of flower stalk, Forca, Sunrise, Isaq, Lillac Torres and White Feathers were grouped under code 31-40, while Cerise Rimo, Desio, Aicardi and Tasman, under code 41-50, and Navajo, under code 51-60. Flower stalk length differed significantly among all the cultivars. The longest stalk (52.26 cm) was obtained in Navajo, followed by Cerise Rimo (48.33 cm) and Desio (47.63 cm), while the shortest in Forca (33.06 cm), although it had thicker stalk. The flower stems of Desio and Lillac Torres were strong, of Aicardi, Forca, Tasman and White Feathers were moderately strong, while of others were weak. Flower fresh weight significantly varied among the cultivars. The highest fresh weight (28.73 g) was recorded in Forca, followed by Tasman (20.16 g) and Aicardi (19.53 g) and lowest (10.10 g) in Lillac Torres. Significant difference was observed in vase life of cultivars. The longest vase life (13.20 days) was recorded in Forca flowers, followed by Isaq (12.23 days), poor (11.36, 11.26 and 11.26 cm, respectively) in Sunrise, Aicardi and Cerise Rimo, while shortest (6.8 days) in Lillac Torres.
