Effect of sucrose and cobalt chloride in the holding solution on the vase life and flower quality of cut scapes of Hemerocallis fulva L. cv. Royal Crown.

Postharvest characteristics of cut scapes of Hemerocallis fulva cv. Royal Crown were studied. When scapes were placed in distilled water, most of the buds failed to develop and abscised prematurely. The flowers which opened were smaller in size and lighter in colour. The same was true of scapes held in CoCl2 (0.15 and 0.25 mM). Inclusion of sucrose (0.15 M) in the holding solution largely mitigated these effects. When sucrose (0.15 M) was present in the holding solution either singly or in combination with CoCl2 (0.15 or 0.25 mM), postharvest performance of scapes was improved. More buds developed and opened successfully to their full size and colour compared to the controls (distilled water). Thus, vase life was significantly enhanced by these treatments. Sucrose (0.15 M) + CoCl2 (0.15 mM) was an especially effective treatment in which nearly 50% of the buds on the scapes opened. Presence of sucrose (0.15 M) in the holding solution always maintained colour of the flowers, and the absorbance values of the total acetone extractable pigments in the perianth of flowers were almost double in treatments containing sucrose (0.15 M) than those lacking it.
