The effects of ethylene and 1-methylcyclopropene on pericarp browning of postharvest lychee fruit.

Although ethylene treatment significantly enhanced polyphenol oxidase [catechol oxidase] (PPO) and peroxidase (POD) activities in lychee (Litchi chinensis cv. Huaizhi) pericarp and, to some extent, enhanced the respiration rate and ethylene production, it had no significant effect on the pericarp browning index and chemical composition of lychee fruits. 1-Methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) treatment had no significant effect on PPO and POD activities, respiration rate, ethylene production and chemical composition of lychee fruits.
