Effect of citric acid and sucrose on post harvest water relations, fresh weight and vase life of golden rod (Solidago canedensis L.).

A field experiment was carried out in Dharwad, Karnataka, India, during 1994-95 to investigate the effects of citric acid and sucrose on postharvest physiology and vase life of golden rod (S. canedensis [S. canadensis]). The treatments consisted of 3 concentrations of citric acid (0, 0.5 and 1.0 mM) and sucrose (0, 2 and 4%), alone and in combinations. Citric acid, alone and in combination with sucrose, increased the vase life by enhancing the water uptake and maintaining better water balance and fresh weight of the cut golden rod flowers. The best combination was 2% sucrose+1.0 mM citric acid. The vase life increased from a minimum of 7.07 days in distilled water to 13.25 days in solutions containing 2% sucrose and 1.0 mM citric acid.
