Effects and interactions of ethylene and abscisic acid in detached and intact miniature rose flowers.

The involvement of abscisic acid (ABA) in flower senescence and leaf drop of rose (Rosa hybrida) was studied, as well as the interaction of ABA and ethylene. Exogenous application of ABA (0.1 mM, sprayed 4 times) to intact miniature potted roses resulted in a clear deterioration of postharvest quality of the miniature rose cultivars Bronze and Vanilla. ABA treatment increased leaf drop and yellowing, and accelerated flower senescence in both cultivars, while bud drop only was induced in Bronze. Application of ABA (1 mM) via the pedicel to detached miniature rose flowers accelerated their senescence. Spraying of intact plants with ABA increased ethylene production in Bronze flowers, while no ethylene production was measured in Vanilla flowers, nor in the leaves of both cultivars. ABA treatment increased the senescence-promoting effect of ethylene on detached rose flowers. Following exposure to exogenous ethylene (3.5 micro litre/litre), ABA (0.1 mM, sprayed twice)-treated flowers wilted faster than non-treated flowers. Expression of 3 ethylene receptor genes in flowers of Bronze and Vanilla increased clearly after spraying with ABA. Treatment with 1-methycyclopropene (1-MCP; at 200 nl/litre for 6 h) delayed ABA-promoted flower senescence in Bronze. The senescence-promoting effect of ABA on leaf drop was not counteracted by 1-MCP treatment in both cultivars, neither did 1-MCP treatment prolong flower life of Vanilla. Vanilla had a low ABA content at all flower stages, while the ABA level of Bronze was high in the buds, lower in the open flowers, and increased concomitantly with the ethylene climacteric in the senescing flowers. Exogenous ethylene also increased the ABA content of Vanilla flowers.
