On-line laser-based detection of trace gas emission by avocado under changing atmospheric conditions.

The dynamic changing, fermentative behaviour of avocado cv. Fuerte fruits was studied during anaerobic periods, up to 20 h, by monitoring the on-line release of acetaldehyde and ethanol, using ultra-sensitive laser-based trace gas detectors. Switching gas conditions from anoxia to normoxia yielded a high upsurge in acetaldehyde release. This upsurge could not be prevented by slowly restoring aerobic conditions. Furthermore, avocados treated with 1 ppm nitric oxide showed a strongly reduced ethylene release (50% decrease).
