Effects of Trichosporon sp. on biocontrol efficacy of grey and blue mold on postharvest apple.

The effects of different formulations and inoculation times of Trichosporon spp. on biological control of postharvest apple (cv. Fuji) diseases were evaluated. When Botrytis cinerea (1x105 spores/ml) and Penicillium expansum (5x104 cells/ml) were applied at challenge levels, 1x108 cells/ml of washed cell Trichosporon suspensions totally inhibited decay on apple fruits at 25 deg C. The infection rate of B. cinerea and P. expansum were both 13%, being 0 when fruits were treated with washed cell suspensions at 1 deg C for 30 days. Culture filtrates of the yeast failed to provide any protection against the 2 pathogens. Rapid colonization of apples from wounds was observed both at the first 48 h at 25 deg C and 5 days at 1 deg C. The population increased more than 50- and 20-fold, respectively, compared to the start point, then stabilized at the same density thereafter. The efficacy of Trichosporon spp. against B. cinerea and P. expansum was maintained when applied before pathogen infection, but when applied simultaneously with or after spore inoculation, biological control efficacy was significantly reduced.
