Seed dormancy in lettuce seeds (Lactuca sativa L.) and its relation with plant vegetation periods.

Some 28 lettuce accessions of different origins were used to study the postharvest dormancy in seeds. The time needed for improvement of seed viability to 90% (p90) was estimated to compare the differences among genotypes. This period varied from 3.17 to 50.56 days and did not depend on the geographical origin. Technical maturation, bolting and blossoming time of lettuce plants were closely correlated. The relationship between postharvest seed dormancy and described plant development phases were not confirmed statistically. However, the application of cluster analysis (Ward's method) illustrated that in particular cases such a relationship could be expected.
