Postharvest response of apple fruits after storing in extreme gas concentrations. I. Ethylene production during post-storage period.

Fruits of apple cultivars Golden Delicious and Idared picked at 7-day intervals at the preclimacteric, at the beginning of climacteric and at the advanced climacteric ripening stages, were stored in different storage atmospheres for 7.5 months at 1 and 4 deg C, respectively. After removal from storage, their ethylene production was analysed. The post-storage period extended up to 191-262 h. At first, a period of a steeply sigmoid increasing ethylene productive curve was observed, followed by a senescence-caused drop of the production rate. The chosen storage conditions and picking dates involved an earlier occurrence of the ethylene production peaks, altered the height of the respective maximum values and the extent of the senescence-caused drop, compared to refrigerated storage conditions (0.03% CO2 and 21% O2). Golden Delicious showed no essential changes between the conditions of ultra-low oxygen-storage and the refrigerated storage atmosphere. Idared, however, exhibited a clearly earlier maximum point and lower activity (up to 33.2%) than Golden Delicious. Picking at the preclimacteric stage had more consequences for the ethylene production rate than picking at the other stages. The senescence-caused drop for the ethylene production rate was least influenced by the storage conditions.
