Extended storage of Red Globe grapes.

Grapes cv. Red Globe were dipped in ethanol (35%) and packed in trays with or without sulfur-dioxide-releasing pads. In another experiment, grapes were packed into trays with or without a perforated polyethylene film liner inside the tray. The trays without liners were overwrapped with stretch polyethylene film after cooling. The grapes were stored for 3.5 months at 0-2 deg C and held for 3 days at 20 deg C before quality assessment. Fruits treated with ethanol or with sulfur-dioxide-releasing pads (0.7 or 1.4 g/kg fruit) were almost entirely decay-free after storage, while control fruits had 100% decay. Fruits remained decay-free during shelf life in trays with or without liners, but more berries developed bleaching due to sulfur dioxide injury in the trays covered with stretch film. In a further experiment, berries were dipped in spore suspensions of Botrytis cinerea and treated with 0, 13, 17 or 55 ppm sulfur dioxide for 15 or 40 h. Sulfur dioxide at 13 ppm for 40 h or 55 ppm for 15 h prevented decay development. Grapes can be stored for 3 months or more without loss of quality under ethanol and sulfur dioxide pad treatments. However, sulfur-dioxide-releasing pads may cause berry bleaching.
