Phytopathogenic fungi associated with fruits marketed in Recife, Pernambuco (Brazil).

Fruits of avocado, lemon, passion fruit, sweet pepper and tomato were analysed for the presence of fungal diseases every three months for one year in the Distribution Centre and in three public markets in the city of Recife, Pernambuco, Brazil. 100 fruits per area per sample were assessed. The incidence of fungal diseases in avocado, passion fruit, lemon, sweet pepper and tomato was on average 38.52, 15.48, 17.55, 1.58 and 6.5%, respectively. The fungi detected with the highest frequency in avocado, lemon, passion fruits, sweet pepper and tomato fruits were Sphaceloma perseae (20.0%), S. fawcettii [Elsinoe fawcettii] (6.2%), Cladosporium herbarum (10.3%), Alternaria alternata (0.67%) and Geotrichum candidum (3.2%), respectively. Thus, the high values of incidence of fungal diseases detected indicate the need for designing pre- and postharvest procedures to reduce the infection risks and promote significant decrease of postharvest losses.
