Effect of hot-water treatment on postharvest disease control of yellow passion fruit.

The effect of hot water treatment on the control of postharvest diseases, mainly anthracnose, in yellow passion fruit (Passiflora edulis f. flavicarpa) was evaluated. Fruits were subjected to hot water treatment at 42.5, 45.0, 47.5, 50.0 and 52.5 deg C for 8 minutes. The fruits were then stored at 10 plus or minus 1 deg C and 90 plus or minus 5% relative humidity for 9 days and at 25 plus or minus 1 deg C an 80 plus or minus 5% relative humidity for another 5 days. Disease index, weight loss, skin and flesh colour, pH, total acidity, soluble solids and vitamin C were evaluated. Treatments at 42.5 and 45.0 deg C significantly reduced the disease index. Other treatments caused fruit scald, which resulted in a higher rot incidence. Among the pathogens identified, Colletotrichum gloeosporioides [Glomerella cingulata] recorded the highest incidence, followed by Cladosporium sp., Phomopsis sp., Fusarium sp. and Rhizopus sp. The hot water treatments had no significant effect on the physicochemical properties of passion fruits.
