Modes of action of biocontrol agents of postharvest diseases: challenges and difficulties.

This paper discusses the importance of determining the mode of action of biological control agents (BCAs) to improve successful postharvest biological control strategies. The protective action of BCAs on one or several of the following processes: nutrient or site competition, antibiosis, direct interactions between the BCA and the pathogen, and induced host resistance, are discussed. Emphasis is given on the difficulties in determining the BCA mode of action, i.e. multiple interactions between antagonist, host, pathogen and other components of natural epiphytic microflora and their interference with the elucidation of BCA mode of action, the difficulty of interpretation of in vitro studies, and the difficulty of proving the involvement of a mechanism at the site of action. The different experimental strategies based on several techniques (microscopy, biochemical and molecular tools) developed to overcome these difficulties are mentioned.
