Effects of corona discharge on decay of fruits and vegetables.

The effect of corona discharge on fruit and vegetable decay was evaluated using a commercially available corona generation system. The equipment used was a single corona generating plate sandwiched between 2 aluminium sheets, and corona was generated by pulsing a voltage of 2.0 kV of alternating polarity of 101 Hz while the second sheet was on the ground. A control system cycled on and off to maintain average ozone levels of 115, 208 or 530 ppb in combination with 19, 49 and 72x103 negative air ion (NAI) per ml. Onions, grapes, lemon, carrots, celery [Apium graveolens] and apples were inoculated or naturally exposed to postharvest pathogens and then observed under the corona generating system. Results indicated that corona discharge may have some applications for reducing the decay of stored fruits and vegetables. Ozone concentration had no effect on postharvest decay. Penicillium spp. was the most sensitive among the pathogens, followed by Sclerotinia sclerotiorum and Botrytis cinerea.
