Prevention of post-harvest diseases on cauliflower.

The control of plant diseases (wilting, yellowing and rot) causing serious post-harvest damage to cauliflower, is reviewed. The possibility of preventing leaf yellowing and head rot, using high dosages of CO2 (5, 10, 15, and 20%) and O2 (2, 5, 10, and 15%) during storage at 0 deg C was evaluated. The effect of PVC film on wilting and yellowing during shelf life at 20 deg C was also tested. The results show that high concentrations of CO2 (10, 15, and 20%) delayed leaf yellowing and Alternaria brassicicola rot on cauliflower. Unfortunately, these levels caused injury inside the stem, and developed off-flavours and odours after cooking. PVC film, wrapped individually around each cauliflower, significantly reduced weight loss, and retarded yellowing during shelf life at 20 deg C, after 5 days.
