New avenues for augmenting and sustaining rice exports from India.

The paper discusses new avenues for augmenting and sustaining rice exports from India. Concrete strategies and pragmatic policies are needed in order to take advantage of the new trade opportunities. Research efforts towards genetic enhancement of quality rices are discussed, covering: development of basmati rices, varietal identification, development of basmati hybrids, appropriate cultural and postharvest practices, and identification of non-basmati quality rices. New avenues for export are then considered, with regard to: opening of Japanese rice markets and prospects for Indian rice, use of short grain aromatic rices, rice-based products, and use of rice byproducts. Measures to sustain the export of rice include: acceleration of breeding efforts in the development of high yielding export-quality rices and identification of contiguous belts for the cultivation of export-quality rices; maintaining quality standards that match those of international markets; assessment of the quality demands of

rice importing countries and development of a strong research base to back up the rice industry; production of quality seeds and ensuring their availability to farmers at subsidized rates; identification of varieties for rice-based products, and the development of new products and processing techniques. The paper also discusses the situation of rice exports and food security.
