Response of graded levels and sources of N fertigation on water relations of cut rose cv. First Red under greenhouse conditions.

A greenhouse experiment to investigate the effect of different N rates and sources of N on the water relations of cut flowers of the rose cultivar First Red was carried out at Coimbatore, India, during 1998-99. The treatments consisted of 3 N rates (50, 100 and 150 ppm) and 4 sources of N, (NH4)2NO3, aqueous NH3, HNO3 and CO(NH2)2 laid out in a factorial randomized block design. Increased N application tended to increase both water loss and water uptake of the flower stalk. The highest treatment mean for water loss and water uptake was observed with (NH4)2NO3 whereas the lowest uptake mean was with CO(NH2)2. Also there was a diminishing trend in the water loss:water uptake ratio with increasing N application. As the N rate increased, the relative water content increased, with a decrease in relative water deficit.
