Control of silver scurf disease in stored potato by using hydrogen peroxide plus (HPP).

To examine the effectiveness of hydrogen peroxide plus (HPP) in preventing silver scurf disease caused by Helminthosporium solani during the storage of potatoes, cv. Desiree tubers were mixed with infected ones and stored in 2 rooms. The tubers were cured for 12 days at 13 plus or minus 1 deg C and 95% RH. Tubers in one room were treated monthly with 10% HPP for 10 h (per treatment), while those in the other room were left untreated and served as the control. After the treatments, temperature was reduced to 9 plus or minus 1 deg C in the storage rooms; these settings were maintained for 6 months. Samples were taken after the first treatment and stored in a separate room to evaluate the effects of a single 10% HPP treatment. Results of the 3-year [date not given] study showed that the decay percentage after 6 months of storage in the room treated 5 times with 10% HPP was 2% compared with 38% in the control. The percent tubers affected 6 months after harvest, after a single 10% HPP treatment was 1

6%. The rate of fungal growth in the control was 7-10 mm per month. After a single treatment of 10% HPP, fungal growth rate was 3-5 mm per month.
