Yield and nutrient contents of cotton (Gossypium hirsutum) and sunflower (Helianthus annuus) as influenced by applied sulphur in irrigated Inceptisol.

Sulfur (0, 10, 20, 30 and 40 kg/ha) was applied to irrigated cotton and sunflower grown in rotation in a sandy loam Inceptisol in a field experiment conducted in Maharashtra, India during the kharif and rabi seasons of 1996-98. Yields of cottonseed and sunflower seeds increased with increasing S rates. Highest yields of cottonseed (1571 kg/ha) and sunflower seed (1114 kg/ha) were recorded with 30 kg S/ha application, which were 23.5 and 16.5% respectively, higher than controls. S content increased in seed of both crops with increasing S rates. Application of S >20 kg/ha decreased P content in cottonseed. S content of the postharvest soil increased from 0 to 0.20 m at the end of the experiment with application of S. Build-up of soil P from 6.0 to 7.0 kg P/ha was observed with application of low rates of S. However, application of S >30 kg/ha reduced P content in the soil at the end of the second year.
