Mechanical and thermal properties of maize.

The mechanical and thermal properties of maize were determined at various moisture contents. Rupture force decreased from 689.5 to 595 N and 330 to 156.8 N with increase of moisture content from 10.57 to 23.68% (db) for kernel placed in germ side down and kernel on edge orientations, respectively. In the same moisture range, rupture energy and deformation of maize kernel varied from 138 to 565 mJ and 0.35 to 1.62 mm in case of the germ side down orientation while on-edge orientation, these varied from 132 to 243 mJ and 0.72 to 2.78 mm, respectively. Specific heat, thermal diffusivity and thermal conductivity varied between 2.002 and 2.996 kJ/kg deg C, 8.33x10-8 and 10.17x10-8 m2/s and 0.125 and 0.193 W/m deg C, respectively, in the temperature range of 30 to 60 deg C and range of 10 to 50% moisture.
