An economic analysis of transplanting versus direct seeding of selected medicinal herbs in New Mexico.

Catnip (Nepeta cataria), nettle (Urtica dioica), calendula (Calendula officinalis), lemon balm (Melissa officinalis), and scarlet globemallow (Sphaeralcea incana) were directly sown and transplanted in a field experiment conducted in Las Cruces and Alcalde, New Mexico, USA during 1995-96 to generate and evaluate cost and return estimates, postharvest requirements and markets for the selected herbs. Catnip had the highest return to land and risk at both growing sites based on the yields obtained from the herbs planted in spring and harvested in autumn, 1996, for both directly sown and transplanted plants. Tabulated data comparing harvests (1995/96), specialized equipment and facilities, established and estimated yield and economic results, and the effect of yield and crop price on return to land and risk for directly sown and transplanted plants are presented.
