Effect of aminooxyacetic acid and sucrose on vase life of cut roses.

The effect of vase solutions containing aminooxyacetic acid (AOA) and sucrose on vase life of cut roses (Rosa hybrida) was studied at ambient conditions (24-28 deg C and 74-81%RH). Cut roses cv. Olympiad were held in distilled water (control) and 5% sucrose together with 0, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0 mM AOA. It is found that cut roses held in all concentrations of AOA plus 5% sucrose had significantly longer vase life than those in the control or sucrose alone but their vase life was not significantly different among all concentrations of AOA. Cut roses held in solutions containing sucrose and AOA had higher water uptake and increase in weight changes and less bent neck than the control. The number of microorganisms in vase water containing AOA was less than that of the control. The solution containing only 5% sucrose with pH adjustment to 2.9 by citric acid had no significant effect on vase life of cut roses. The solution containing 5% sucrose and 0.5 mM AOA with pH adjustment from 2.9 (before adjus

tment) to 4.5 was less effective in prolonging the vase life of cut roses as compared to the solution without pH adjustment (pH 2.9). The solution containing 5% sucrose and 0.5 mM AOA also significantly increased vase life of 'Sissel Krykjebo', 'White Chrismas', 'Super Star' and 'Sweet Surrender' cut roses.
