Influence of dry storage on postharvest life and quality of cut roses.

Influence of dry storage at 4 deg C on cut roses of cultivars Folklore and Queen Elizabeth was studied. Cut flowers were pulsed with 3% sucrose and 150 ppm 8-HQC for 24 h at 20-21 deg C prior to storage. The pulsed flowers were packed in a polyethylene bags of 200 gauge thickness and 60 x 30 cm size. Dry packed flowers were stored at 4 deg C at 70-75% RH for 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 or 10 days. Dry storage increased fresh and dry weights after storage and enhanced postharvest life and quality of cut roses for flowers stored dry for 4 and 5 days. Flowers stored for 10 days recorded highest fresh and dry weights after storage, but the shortest vase life after storage. Under dry storage conditions at 4 deg C, cut roses can be successfully stored for up to 6 days without hampering ultimate vase life and quality at ambient temperature compared with the controls. Vase life started declining after 7 days storage. Even after 10 days storage, the vase life of Folklore and Queen Elizabeth was 2.5 and 3 days, resp

ectively, but quality was poor.
