Studies on non-refrigerated storage of potatoes.

Four non-refrigerated storage methods namely passive-draft evaporatively cooled storage, radioactively cooled storage, farm level (brick + sand) storage and evaporatively cooled storage of potatoes were investigated. The shrinkage was first observed in 7-12 week of storing potatoes cv. Kufri-Chandermukhi and sprouting was first seen in 3-8 week of storage. Assuming 10% total weight loss as the safe and economical limit, Kufri-Chandermukhi can be stored for upto 10-13 weeks in non-refrigerated storage structures while under ambient conditions, potatoes can only be stored for up to 8 weeks. Taking into consideration various aspects of non-refrigerated storage, farm level (brick + sand) store was the best for storing potatoes.
