Prolonging vase life of Dendrobium flowers: the substitution of aluminum sulfate and cobalt chloride for silver nitrate in holding solution.

Effect of aluminium sulfate (2Al2(SO4)3) at 50, 100 and 150 mg/l and cobalt chloride (CoCl2) at 100, 200 and 300 mg/l in the holding solution containing 225 mg/l 8-hydroxyquinoline sulfate (HQS) and 4% glucose on vase life of Dendrobium sp. 'Sonia Bom Joe' in comparison with the conventional holding solution containing 225 mg/HQS, 30 mg/l AgNO3 and 4% glucose was studied at ambient conditions (30.2 deg C and 62% RH). All concentrations of Al2(SO4)3 and 200 mg/l CoCl2 in the holding solutions increased vase life and bud opening of orchid flowers as effectively as the standard holding solution. Based on the cost and safety to the environment, Al2(SO4)3 at 50 mg/l was an optimum concentration to substitute AgNO3 in the conventional solution and Al2(SO4)3 could not be used to substitute HQS in the holding solution. The holding solution containing 225 mg/l HQS, 50 mg/l Al2(SO4)3 and 4% glucose also significantly increased the vase life and bud opening of Dendrobium 'Sonia Red Joe' and Dendrobium 'Wal

ter Oumae Taba 4N' flowers.
