Response of sugarcane genotypes to post-harvest deterioration under natural field conditions (exposed to sun) vs. shade.

An investigation was carried out to determine the stability/deterioration of five promising sugarcane genotypes of Indian Punjab on post-harvest storage for 360 h under natural field conditions (exposed to sun) vs. shade from the end of February to the start of March 1998. Cv. CoJ 85 was highly stable followed by CoJ 86, CoJ 83, S 210/91 and CoJ 84 under sun, while CoJ 83 was most stable followed by CoJ 85, CoJ 86, S 210/91 and CoJ 84 under shade, as determined by analysis of regression coefficients for cane weight loss (%), pol loss in juice (% cane) and increase in mollasogenic sugars (% cane) as dependent factors and post-harvest duration (1-360 h) as the independent variable. The cane weight loss (%), pol loss in juice (% cane) and increase in mollasogenic sugars (% cane) were higher in cane stalks under sun as compared to the cane kept under shade conditions, except that cane weight loss was higher in shade than sun in CoJ 85.
