Studies on the biocidal activities of certain essential oils.

Essential oils derived from medicinal and aromatic plants have been found to exhibit fungicidal, bactericidal, insecticidal, antifeedant, antigonadal, nematicidal, repellent/attractant activities. These have also proved the usefulness in controlling postharvest fungal diseases, affect the behaviour responses of pests, kill or repell pests which are harmful to humans, animals and crops. Thus, essential oils and their constituents have been reported to be a potent source of environmentally safe biocides (botanical pesticides) that could be explored for commercial application. In the recent years, researchers have started taking interest in the isolation and identification of the active principles that could be exploited as short term and long term biocides. These promising materials should undergo large scale field testing and research and development needs to be strengthened on essential oil based biocides.
