Post-harvest life, quality and respiration rate of rose cultivars.

Eleven different hybrid tea rose cultivars were evaluated for their postharvest life and quality. Fresh weight and longevity of cut flowers varied with the cultivar. In all cultivars, fresh weight increased on the fourth day in the vase and declined at senescence. Longevity of cut flowers was associated with fresh weight and water uptake. Irrespective of cultivar, respiration rates increased sharply during flower development and petal expansion stages and declined markedly at senescence after the full expansion of flowers. In the cut rose cultivars which lasted longer, the rate of respiration at different stages of flower development and ageing were comparatively lower than that of cultivars which lasted for a shorter time.
