Comparative analysis for seed supply systems in Honduras.

The study characterizes three systems: traditional, Small Local Seed Enterprises (SLSE) and entrepreneurial seed supply. The traditional seed supply system dates back a millennium and accounts for 84% of the national seed supply; uses local and family labour; has a broad genetic diversity; and operates on marginal land, with steep slopes. The SLSE system accounts for 0.4% of the national seed supply for maize and bean; and is favoured by farmer associations with training opportunities and other types of external support. The entrepreneurial seed supply system accounts for 15.6% of the national seed supply; the field operations and postharvest processes demand machinery and specialist equipment, and a heavy use of capital.
