Studies on ripening of some banana cultivars grown in Bihar.

Three uniform branches from each of the 11 banana cultivars were harvested in September-October 1992 and 1993, in Bihar, India, and were allowed to ripen naturally under natural conditions. Cultivars belonging to genomic group AAA took longer to ripen compared to those belonging to AAB and ABB groups. Among cultivars in the AAB group, "Malbhog" and "Alpan" took only 5 days, while AAA cultivars like "Robusta" and "73-9" required 11 days to ripen under ambient condition. All the AAA cultivars were found to possess lower withstanding ability after full ripening (2 to 3 days) compared to the AAB and ABB cultivars (5 to 11 days). Storability of "Robusta" and "73-9" (14.33 days) was fairly good. "Kothia," a dual purpose cultivar, could be stored for a maximum period of 17 days.
